Following an inconsistent start to the season and a string of injuries, the reigning Premier League champions are eager to reinforce their ranks in pursuit of both domestic and European glory.
City's midfield, in particular, has been a pressing concern after Rodri's season-ending knee injury left a significant void. The Spaniard's absence has disrupted the team's balance, exposing weaknesses in defence and midfield.
Guardiola has identified key targets to address these issues, with Newcastle United's Bruno Guimaraes emerging as an early priority. Known for his defensive solidity and vision, Guimaraes seemed a perfect fit.
However, Newcastle's valuation of one hundred million pounds proved a stumbling block, prompting City to consider other options.
Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi has since become a strong candidate. The Spanish midfielder's composure and tactical intelligence align well with Guardiola's philosophy, and with a release clause in his contract, he represents a more realistic acquisition.
"Zubimendi could bring the stability we need," a City source reportedly said, highlighting the midfielder's potential to allow Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden more creative freedom.
In attack, City are also looking to bolster their options. Paris Saint-Germain's Randal Kolo Muani has been linked, with his pace and finishing offering a potential solution to Erling Haaland's patchy form and Julian Alvarez's departure to Atletico Madrid.
Meanwhile, Brighton's Evan Ferguson is being targeted for his long-term potential and immediate impact as a forward.
Rumours have also surfaced about interest in Jamal Musiala from Bayern Munich. The German international's versatility, able to play in midfield or at full-back, would provide tactical flexibility and defensive reinforcement.
As January approaches, Guardiola's intent is clear: to create a squad capable of adapting and thriving amid challenges. Whether through Guimaraes' tenacity, Zubimendi's poise, Kolo Muani's flair, or Ferguson's promise, Manchester City are determined to emerge from the transfer window stronger and ready to reclaim their dominance.
