Man Utd starlet Kobbie Mainoo nominated for Premier League Young Player of the Season award

Kobbie Mainoo has been rewarded for his breakthrough campaign at Manchester United with a nomination for the Premier League's Young Player of the Season award.

The Academy graduate, who turned 19 last month, made his first league start at Everton in November and hasn't looked back since.

Mainoo has gone on to play 20 Premier League games for United, scoring two goals, both of them spectacular efforts, against Wolves and Liverpool.

His impressive showings in Erik ten Hag's midfield resulted in him winning the club's Player of the Month prize in January and he was also picked in Gareth Southgate's England squad for the latest set of international friendlies.

Kobbie was awarded his Three Lions debut against Brazil at Wembley and then started in the 2-2 draw with Belgium at the same stadium, three days later.

The Stockport-born midfielder's nomination for this accolade - first given out to Trent Alexander-Arnold in 2020 - is the latest feather in his cap.

Players aged 23 or younger at the beginning of the season qualify for consideration, meaning Mainoo faces some serious competition, not least from the Premier League's leading scorer Erling Haaland and the recently crowned FWA Footballer of the Year, Phil Foden.

The Manchester City pair have both previously won the prize, with Foden coming out on top, in 2021 and 2022, and Haaland claiming first place last term.

Arsenal duo Bukayo Saka and William Saliba are recognised for their roles in the Gunners' impressive campaign, while Cole Palmer - scorer of 21 league goals in his first year at Chelsea - is also on the shortlist.

Newcastle United forward Alexander Isak, after 20 goals in 27 games, and Destiny Udogie, Tottenham's flying full-back, round it off.
