Manqoba Mngqithi: One-year deal for Zwane the right call

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi supports the club’s decision to only give captain Themba Zwane a short-term contract.

The Downs fan base have been divided over the announcement as some feel the midfielder had done enough to be given more than one year.

Mngqithi explained why he holds this view.

''I think it is the right thing to do, because for players at that age - it is important to keep them on their toes. I don't think it necessarily means you will be out of the club after one year. But for him to stay sharp, it is important that he knows that he has to fight for the next contract. If all PSL teams can adopt that it will be the best thing that we can do for our football, because most of these senior players want to get a fair contract because they know they are looking into retirement. I think Mshishi is the right player for that because he is a very professional player, he will work very hard and give it his best shot,'' said Mngqithi.

Another player who is expected to prove himself this season is goalkeeper Jody February after the club triggered the option to hold on to him for one more season.

Mngqithi has been impressed with the 28-year-old despite his lack of game time at Chloorkop since joining the club five seasons ago.

''To be honest there's been a  big mindset change in him, he came in pre-season very early, and he had a very good pre-season with us. Sometimes it is important for these boys to get into the deep end so that they can swim, so that you can see what you have after that. Him, Reyaad and Sanele have to fight very hard while Ronwen is still out.  It is important for a player like him to get a chance to play and I believe he is a very good goalkeeper, before he lacked a bit of personality. But take it from me, now he is looking good even in training,'' added Mngithi.

The Sundowns mentor also reacted to the MTN8 semifinal draw, which sees his side take on Stellenbosch FC over two legs while Orlando Pirates face Cape Town City.

''Honestly, I think it is a very good draw for all the teams. I think it is going to be a good preparation for us, because our season will be defined by these types of matches. To win the championship, you must be able to win these games,'' he concluded.
