Maswanganyi’s ice-cold penalty seals dramatic Soweto Derby win for Pirates

Orlando Pirates broke Kaizer Chiefs' hearts with a dramatic last-minute penalty converted by Patrick Maswanganyi, sealing a 1-0 victory in a thrilling Soweto Derby at a packed FNB Stadium.

The match seemed destined for a goalless draw until Relebohile Mofokeng was brought down inside the box in stoppage time. Maswanganyi stepped up and calmly slotted home the penalty, sending Bruce Bvuma the wrong way and sparking wild celebrations among the Buccaneers' fans.

Both teams created numerous goal-scoring opportunities, but it was Pirates who looked more dangerous in attack. Tshegofatso Mabasa had the best chances but was denied twiceâ”first by Rushwin Dortley's block in the 31st minute, then by Bvuma's save after a failed clearance.

Chiefs also had their moments, with Pule Mmodi missing a golden chance early on and Ranga Chivaviro narrowly missing the target with a curling effort in the 76th minute.

As the clock ticked down, both teams pushed for a late winner, but it was Pirates who found the breakthrough in injury time when Mofokeng was fouled inside the box by Njabulo Blom.

The referee immediately pointed to the spot, and Maswanganyi held his nerve to bury the penalty and secure a crucial win for the Buccaneers.

With this victory, Orlando Pirates (30 points) edge closer to league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns (33), who remain three points ahead after 12 games. Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs will be left ruing their missed opportunities as they stay in fifth place on the log with 21 points.
