Miguel Cardoso plays open cards with rotation policy at Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso is expected to make wholesale changes to the line-up this afternoon when The Brazilians face amateur side Mpheni Home Defenders in the Nedbank Cup.

Cardoso has revealed there are 10 injured players in his squad, all of whom are at different stages of their recovery.

With their current congested schedule, the coach feels it is necessary to take advantage of having several options in his playing personnel.

Cardoso explains why it is necessary to apply the rotation system at Sundowns.

"The club was already in a cup final this season and we have a strong desire to reach the final then play for the cup. Obviously at the moment we have players that are super overloaded and the risk of injury is very, very high,” Cardoso said.

“Also, it's important that you understand we have a big squad but in the moment we have 10 injured players. So, sometimes people are asking for players that cannot even play because they are not in a condition to play but some credit for the work of the staff and the club.

“Some of them are already on the last stages of the recovery process so that they make the team stronger and we face the opponents in the right way, that is obviously rotating players and maintaining the level of the team."

The Portuguese mentor is adamant that not resting a few of the key players will be risking fatigue and even more injuries.

"Eventually we will change a couple of players but it has to do not with the level of the opponent but with the needs that we have, otherwise you risk to have injuries by overuse, by overstress, by fatigue and it's not that moment of the season with such big responsibilities to lose players."
