Muhsin Ertugral: Lack of technical vision, planning hampering Kaizer Chiefs

Chiefs are now well on their way to finishing their ninth consecutive season without silverware – something they last tasted during Stuart Baxter’s first tenure that ended 2014/15. 

During a discussion on Radio 2000’s Game On show with Thabiso Mosia last night, while reflecting on the latest spate of results – including the embarrassing Nedbank Cup elimination at the hands of lower division side Milford FC, Ertugral says it all points to a lack of technical vision by Amakhosi.

"The biggest problem is that the greatest enemy of yourself is always the illusion of knowledge. So, if you think you know it, that's an illusion and that's the enemy for you," said Ertugral.

"So in the end, if you don't know today's football is changing everyday, and as I went myself to the Turkish national team, it was for me also to adjust to the situation of what is happening.

"So I think you can see with [Mamelodi] Sundowns, they are running away in South African football and [competing] internationally as well – behind the scenes, for me, there are very influential people, I can't not mention Mr [Flemming] Berg.

"Behind the scenes he is already looking [to the future]. Sporting directors are not the ones grinding the results – that's the technical part, but sporting directors and people behind the scenes are grinding results for the next 10 years.

"So you need to have... I don't think that's what's being done by Kaizer Jnr or behind the scenes by people who are in the business, but you really need to have expertise who can handle and grind the results for the next 10 years – that's what's not happening at Chiefs." 

Chiefs’ unending struggles saw drastic changes made in 2021, with former player and youngest son of club chairman and founder Kaizer Motaung Junior introduced as Sporting Director.

Football Manager Bobby Motaung took a more behind-the-scenes role as a result, with Kaizer Jnr more prominent and hands-on in the club's technical matters.
