Nedbank Cup: Controversial late goal gives Kaizer Chiefs victory over Stellenbosch

Kaizer Chiefs scored two goals in stoppage-time to beat Stellenbosch 3-1 in a controversial Nedbank Cup quarterfinal clash played at the Nelson Mandela Stadium on Saturday.

The game looked to be headed to extra-time with the score at 1-1 when Amakhosi had a corner deep into referee's additional time and, from the resultant set-piece, it looked as if Stellenbosch goalkeeper Sage Stephens had been fouled before Pule Mmodi eventually put the ball in the back of the net.

The assistant referee had signaled a foul while Chiefs players were celebrating but, after a consultation with the on-field official, the goal was given to the ire of the Stellenbosch players and management.

Chiefs then scored again from a breakaway when, after Stellies had thrown everyone forward, Mfundo Vilakazi ran the half of the pitch to put the ball into an empty net to seal the contest.

Amakhosi took the lead in the 17th minute when Ismael Toure was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box and Inacio Miguel stepped up to beat Stephens from the penalty spot.

Stellies were always in the contest though but could not penetrate a well-oiled Chiefs defence but the equaliser did come in the with three minutes remaining.

The Cape club whipped in a corner and forward Andre de Jong, who came off the bench, found the slightest of flicks with his head but it was enough to beat goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma,

The equaliser drew wild celebrations from the Stellies players and management with the match now headed to extra-time and maybe a penalty shoot-out.

However there was still late drama to come in the contest and the dramatic ending will be analysed in the coming days with Stellenbosch head coach Steve Barker storming off the pitch after a confrontation with the match officials.

For Amakhosi it is another small step to end their trophy drought which has now gone on for close to a decade as they join Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates in the last four of the Nedbank Cup.
