Noko Matlou in the quarterfinals of Copa de la Reina in Spain

Banyana Banyana defender Noko Matlou is in the quarterfinals of the prestigious Copa de la Reina Women after helping her Second Division Spanish side El Cacereño to a 2-1 victory over favourites and Premier League outfit, Athletic Bilbao.

The win was the second against a Premier League side after they defeated Valencia 1-0 in the previous match.

Cacereño are the only second-division team left in the competition.

Matlou has settled in nicely in Spain with 90-minute appearances for her new club.

“I am happy because I have been playing all the games and 90 minutes each time. The Cope de la Reina is not an easy competition and that we have knocked out two Premier League teams is an amazing feat, more so because in the last match we had to play the second half with 10 players after one of our players was given her marching orders. We scored in the final minute of the game, it was just incredible,” said an excited Matlou from Spain.

The Banyana defender and company are keeping hope alive of a play-off spot to stand a chance of promotion into the elite league.

El Cacereño is currently sixth on the table after 13 matches – only positions two to five will qualify for the play-offs, but if Barcelona, which has a team in the top league, is among the top three, then the team at number six will join the promotion play-offs.

“We are working really hard to see if we can’t push and get to the play-offs where anything can happen. But I am confident that we will make it, provided we remain consistent and have the same momentum in the league as we have in the cup games,” added Matlou.

“What I like about this league is that it is just as competitive as the Women’s Premier League, so one has to be on top of her game in every match.”

The Spanish women’s league is on a short break and action will resume on 12 January when Matlou’s side will be away to Atletico Madrid B.
