Noko Matlou confirms Banyana Banyana retirement

Banyana Banyana veteran Noko Matlou has declared she will officially be retiring from international football after she runs out one last time against Malawi next month.

The 39-year-old striker-cum-defender is set to bring the curtain down on an illustrious international playing career which saw her win the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and help Banyana to a historic 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup Last 16 appearance.

Speaking exclusively to SABC Sport, Matlou says she is happy to be leaving the national team in a better space, making room for the next generation to take the baton.

"I'm officially retiring from international football, the game against Malawi will be my last game for Banyana Banyana," Matlou said.

"Reflecting on my journey, it has been a long one filled with ups and downs, but at the end of the day I reached my goal and I'm happy because I'm leaving the team in a good space.

"I think the team is in a good space and I think it's time for me to give young players a chance, to show their talent just as I showed my talent since I made my debut.

"So, ja, I think it's time for me to retire from international football."

Matlou is set to earn her 176th senior international cap against Malawi, making her the second-most capped national team player after former captain Janine van Wyk (185).

She has expressed gratitude to coach Desiree Ellis for awarding her a send-off in front of her home fans.

"I just want to say thanks to Coach Des for giving me this last opportunity to represent my country for the last time, with the green and gold jersey," she added.

"It means a lot to me to represent my country for the last time, especially since we're playing at home so that people, my fans and everyone, can honour me for the last time in a green and gold jersey."
