Janine van Wyk celebrates Mpumi Nyandeni’s anticipated 150th Banyana cap

Former Banyana Banyana captain Janine van Wyk has celebrated the national call up of Nompumelelo Nyandeni, who she feels is deserving of a 150th international cap.

The JVW midfielder is part of coach Desiree Ellis’ 23-player Banyana squad to host Malawi for two international friendlies next month following a prolonged absence from the national team.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Van Wyk says this milestone is testament to Nyandeni talent, resilience and passion for the beautiful game.

“Mpumi reaching her 150th cap is a massive achievement, and I couldn’t be prouder of her. She has been a dedicated servant to the game for so many years,” said van Wyk.

“And this milestone is a testament to her talent, resilience, and passion. It’s a moment she truly deserves, and I’m happy she’s finally getting the recognition for it.”

Nyandeni, who is the third-highest capped Banyana player behind van Wyk (185) and Noko Matlou (176), last featured in the national team in 2019.

Despite her lengthy wait for the milestone, Van Wyk, who now coaches her former teammate at JVW FC, says she should go out and enjoy the moment.

“My advice to Mpumi would be to enjoy the moment. She’s already proven herself at this level, so there’s no need for pressure.” she added.

“I want her to focus on playing her natural game. Staying composed, trusting in her experience, and leading by example will be key.”

The JVW boss further shared her expectation ahead of the friendlies against Malawi, stating it’s a moment for coach Desiree Ellis to fine-tune her combinations in the final phase of their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations preparations.

“In the matches against Malawi, we need to show a step up in performance and cohesion, especially after testing the younger players against Lesotho.

“It’s about fine-tuning combinations, building momentum, and ensuring the team is in the best possible shape for upcoming challenges,’’ concluded the 37-year-old.
