Ole Werner delighted with Werder Bremen's emphatic win against Union Berlin

Werder Bremen capped off 2024 in style with a decisive 4-1 victory over Union Berlin, marking their third consecutive league win under the guidance of manager Ole Werner.

The match, held at a jubilant Weserstadion, left Union Berlin extending their winless streak to seven matches, their last victory dating back to 20 October.

"We played excellent football with some great link-up play, and all our goals were well-worked," said Werner.

"The fact that we did well when in possession was also key today, because Union defend well and haven't allowed their opponents many chances so far this season.

"As a team, we have recorded a clear improvement over the course of the year, which is now being reflected by our results."

The game started brightly for Bremen, with Marco Grull stealing the show early.

Grull opened the scoring in the 13th minute, expertly heading home a Romano Schmid cross. Just four minutes later, he struck again, converting a precise assist from Derrick Kohn to put Bremen firmly in control.

Union Berlin briefly sparked hope when Andras Schafer volleyed in Tom Rothe's cross in the 23rd minute.

However, Bremen regained their dominance just before half-time as Mitchell Weiser finished off Kohn's second assist of the match.

Despite increased possession in the second half, Union Berlin struggled to breach Bremen's well-organised defence.

Substitutes Tim Skarke and Josip Juranovic attempted to make an impact, but Bremen's counter-attacking strategy held firm.

Jens Stage sealed the win in the 87th minute, concluding a fluid team move to the delight of the home crowd.
