Monnapule Saleng emerged as the hero for Pirates, netting a crucial brace to seal a first league 'double' over Chiefs since the 2008-09 season. Meanwhile, Ashley du Preez's efforts weren't enough to secure a win for the AmaKhosi despite his brace.
The victory propelled Pirates to second place on the league table with 33 points, while Chiefs slipped to seventh position with 29 points.
Chiefs dominated the early exchanges, with Pule Mmodi threatening just two minutes into the game. However, it was Du Preez who broke the deadlock four minutes later, capitalizing on a clever pass from Mmodi to give Chiefs the lead with a clinical finish.
The setback spurred Pirates into action, and they responded emphatically. Patrick Maswanganyi's persistent runs down the left flank caused havoc in the Chiefs defence, ultimately leading to Saleng's equalizer in the 24th minute.
Despite Chiefs regaining the lead just before half-time through Du Preez's sensational volley, Pirates remained undeterred. Thabiso Lebitso's spectacular long-range effort in the 57th minute drew them level once again to make it 2-2.
The turning point arrived in the 68th minute when Maswanganyi's precise lob found Saleng, who capitalized on the opportunity to notch his second goal of the day, propelling Pirates into a 3-2 lead.
Despite Chiefs' late efforts to salvage a point, their attempts were thwarted by a resilient Pirates defence, ensuring a thrilling victory for the Buccaneers.
Both teams will resume Premiership action later in the month, with Orlando Pirates facing Sekhukhune United and Kaizer Chiefs taking on Cape Town City FC.
