Orlando Pirates skipper Innocent Maela looking to make history in Durban

Orlando Pirates captain Innocent Maela is looking ahead to a very big weekend, where he could be making history by becoming the first skipper to lift the MTN8 title three times in a row.

Pirates play Stellenbosch FC in the Wafa-Wafa final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, in what will be their fifth cup final under head coach Jose Riveiro in three years.

Despite not wanting to get ahead of himself, Maela is cautiously confident about lifting yet another trophy.

"I think every time we have an opportunity to make history or leave a legacy, obviously it should be inspiring. At this moment, preparing for the final this week, the focus is mainly on our training sessions and how we prepare,” Maela said.

“When you have an opportunity to make history and leave a little bit of a legacy in this club with so much rich history then obviously it's inspiring, it makes you want to push more but that is not on the top of our heads at the moment.

“It's just for us to go out there, train well, do what we always do, how we prepare for all the other matches and give attention to detail."

Pirates also have a good record in the finals they have played at the Moses Mabhida Stadium and Maela says this is something they aim to build on, in this game as well.

"Look, I think it's true that we've had good moments playing at Moses Mabhida Stadium but I mean we don't believe that maybe it's superstition that is helping us. I think in all the games that we play, we approach the matches to win and we approach the matches to play in a certain way which helps us a lot,” he added.

“Yeah, Durban has always been good to us and hopefully again this coming Saturday, it will be the same but we also need to give credit to our supporters in Durban, you know, they support us, they come out in numbers and they push us. “They give us that competitive urge but I think from a player's perspective it's always going into the matches thinking about the planning and how we have to execute and express ourselves within that structure."
