The Buccaneers made two changes to their starting line-up, bringing in Sandile Mthethwa and Deon Hotto for Thembinkosi Lorch, who was unavailable. Meanwhile, Cape Town City were missing Thabo Nodada and Brice Ambina due to suspension.
The hosts had an early chance to take the lead when Innocent Maela's header narrowly missed the mark. However, it was Cape Town City who struck first, with Khanyisa Mayo finding the back of the net in the 18th minute after a well-worked move with Juan Zapata.
But Pirates quickly responded, with Terrence Dzvukamanja heading in a corner kick to level the scores at 1-1 in the 27th minute.
The Buccaneers continued to press forward, creating several opportunities, but were unable to break through Cape Town City's resolute defence.
In the 60th minute, Pirates made two substitutions, introducing Fortune Makaringe for Kabelo Dlamini and bringing James Monyane on for Innocent Maela.
The changes paid off as Monnapule Saleng capitalized on a defensive lapse from Cape Town City in the 77th minute, curling in a shot from a tight angle to put Pirates ahead 2-1.
Despite enjoying more chances towards the end of the game, Pirates held on to secure the victory and climb to second place in the standings, while Cape Town City are in fifth position.
