After enduring a lengthy absence from the field, Schick marked his resurgence by netting a crucial goal in the 74th minute, sealing a 2-0 victory over Swedish outfit BK Hacken.
The elation was palpable as Schick, with a beaming smile, made a beeline for the Bayer bench. Among the first to embrace him was Werkself trainer Xabi Alonso, followed closely by teammate Jonas Hofmann. For Schick, whose journey included battling injury setbacks, this moment held profound significance.
With six fixtures remaining before the winter break, Schick's return to form couldn't have been timelier. The 27-year-old is poised to play a pivotal role for his team, especially in January when Victor Boniface represents Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Reflecting on his emotional comeback, Schick shared his joy in a post-match interview with German broadcaster RTL, stating, "It wasn't easy to come back after such a long injury lay-off. I'm very happy that I was able to celebrate with the coaching staff and my teammates. [Assist provider Josip] Stanisic did a good job locating me."
Teammate Jonas Hofmann echoed the sentiment, acknowledging the challenges Schick faced stepping back into the game. In his post-match interview, Hofmann remarked, "It wasn't easy for him to come into a game like this and onto a pitch like this. I think you could tell that everyone was happy for him. It was a nice gesture that he immediately ran towards the bench and everyone went straight to him."
The collective joy and camaraderie exhibited by the team highlighted the significance of Schick's return. Beyond the individual milestone, his goal carried immense weight for the squad. As Leverkusen look ahead to the challenges ahead, Schick's resurgence serves as a beacon of hope, signalling a force to be reckoned with.
