Polokwane City hold on for all three points at home to Marumo Gallants

Polokwane City secured a massive three points in their 1-0 victory over Marumo Gallants on Sunday afternoon.

Mokibelo Ramabu netted the only goal of the game at the Peter Mokaba Stadium after 20 minutes.

The result left the club just a point behind Betway Premiership league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns and second-placed Orlando Pirates in third place - although having played three games more.

Gallants ended the weekend in 11th place with 10 points from their opening nine fixtures.

The home side were certainly up for this tie and looked to attack from the off.

Thabang Matuludi had a great chance to open the scoring early on but he powered his header from a Cole Alexander corner wide of the mark.

But it didn't take long for Polokwane to take the lead as Ramabu scored a second successive goal with a good finish from a Tlou Nkwe cross into the box.

Oswin Appollis should have extended his side's lead but but flashed his effort wide, from another good Cole delivery.

Gallants looked to hit back in the second half and Daniel Msendami came close to an equaliser with a rocket of a shot that flew just wide.

Matome Matiane powered a header goalward but without threatening Manuel Sapunga in the City goal.

The away team were certainly giving it a go and probably edged the second period.

They even came close to a last-gasp equaliser only for Matuludi to clear a goal-bound shot off the line.

City are next in action away to Golden Arrows while Gallants are away to Orlando Pirates.
