Real Madrid have suffered another blow in the defensive department as Antonio Rudiger was forced off after just 15 minutes in the 1-0 loss to Espanyol on Saturday.

Rudiger dropped to the ground after challenging for a header and quickly indicated he could not continue. Despite being able to walk off the pitch, Ancelotti's concerns were backed up, as the club confirmed a hamstring injury for the 31-year-old.

Initial estimates indicate it is not a serious issue for the Germany international, but he will miss between 2-3 weeks, as per Spanish outlet Relevo.

That will rule him out for a minimum of four games, including Real Madrid's UEFA Champions League Round of 16 playoff first leg at Manchester City, with major doubts over whether he could return for the second leg in Madrid.

With Eder Militao already sidelined long-term and David Alaba just returning from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, another central defender is out of action.

Due to the injuries to Militao and Alaba, Rudiger has been a key figure for Real Madrid since the start of last season. As a result, he has rarely had the chance to rest, with Carlo Ancelotti having only Aurelien Tchouameni and Raul Asencio as alternative options in central defense.

Real confirmed the news in the following statement on the club's official website.

"Following tests carried out on Antonio Rudiger by Real Madrid's medical services, the player has been diagnosed with an injury to the biceps femoris in his right leg. His progress will be monitored," read the statement.
