Reece James strikes as Chelsea edge Copenhagen in thriller

Chelsea have taken a slender 2-1 advantage back to Stamford Bridge after a hard-fought victory over FC Copenhagen in the first leg of their Europa Conference League last-16 tie.

The Blues, led by Enzo Maresca, extended their perfect record in Europe this season, but the Danish side ensured the contest remains alive heading into the return leg.

The breakthrough came just after the interval when captain Reece James, deployed in midfield by Maresca, unleashed a low, driven strike from distance to open the scoring.

The 25-year-old's goal, his first in the competition this season, arrived seconds into the second half and showcased his growing influence in a more central role.

Chelsea doubled their lead on 65 minutes through substitute Enzo Fernandez, who finished smartly from Tyrique George's cut-back in the box.

Copenhagen, disciplined and resolute throughout, responded late on. A towering header from Gabriel Pereira off a set-piece with 10 minutes remaining halved the deficit, giving the hosts hope ahead of next week's clash in London. Despite dominating possession, Chelsea had struggled to break down their opponents in a cagey first half, with an injury to Malo Gusto compounding their early frustrations.

Maresca, speaking after the match, heaped praise on James, who has battled injuries in recent seasons but is now finding his feet in a new position. "We know how important he is for us," the Italian said.

"He's our captain, a fantastic player. We need him fit, that's our duty, our target, because he's going to help us. He can play in many positions; good players can do that. The day after I signed for Chelsea, I sent Reece a video showing how I see him as a midfielder. Since day one, that's been my vision for him."

The Blues' boss revealed he had long planned the positional switch, even sending James a tactical clip during the player's summer holiday. "He's played full-back, central defender, but the main target is keeping him fit," Maresca added.

James' adaptability could prove vital as Chelsea aim to maintain their European momentum.

Chelsea's second-half surge proved decisive, though Copenhagen's late strike keeps the tie finely poised. The West Londoners, who topped their league phase with six wins from six, now hold the upper hand but will be wary of a spirited Danish outfit at Stamford Bridge.

In an update on X, Chelsea confirmed James' impact, with the club posting: "Captain fantastic! Reece James fires us ahead in Copenhagen." Maresca also took to social media, hinting at his satisfaction with the tactical tweak: "Step by step, we're building something special."

For Copenhagen, manager Jacob Neestrup vowed his team would fight on, telling X followers: "One goal back, one leg to go, we're not done yet."

The stage is set for a gripping return leg as Chelsea look to seal their place in the quarter-finals.
