SABC Sport has it on good authority that, while the coach hasn’t yet put pen to paper, Sundowns are confident this is no indication he wants to leave the club.
There’s been speculation doing the rounds on why Mokwena has stalled on the deal since the public broadcaster had it confirmed by his agent, Steve Kapelushnick, that talks had begun.
Reports have suggested Mokwena wants to make changes to the technical team, which includes Steve Komphela, Manqoba Mngqithi, and goalkeeper coach Wendell Robinson.
His agent had long indicated, however, that there were expectations during the contract negotiations that Mokwena should be given leeway to make decisions on who forms part of his technical team.
Downs have appeared open-minded by allowing him to rope in Michael Loftman as the club’s set-piece specialist, after the two worked together at Orlando Pirates, and Mokwena is keen to bring in more familiar faces.
According to information gathered by SABC Sport, the new four-year contract has only been offered to Mokwena and not the rest of his technical team – Komphela and Mngqithi in particular.
The duo's existing agreements will run out in June 2024.
Mokwena’s most recent comment to the media, when asked about putting pen to paper, was that he will still be at Chloorkop next season.
“The club will make an announcement. I love this club. I am falling in love with it every single day [and] I get incredible support from the club, the chairman, the Motsepe family and the board. And there’s a very good relationship with the players. What more can a coach ask for?” he said last month.
Downs are confident he will follow up on that statement by signing the new offer that’s currently on the table before August when the 2023/24 season kicks off.
