Rodrigo de Paul's Atletico Madrid struggles raise doubts over future

Since joining Atletico Madrid in 2021, Rodrigo de Paul's connection with fans has been a turbulent one, with reactions swinging from cheers to jeers.

The Argentine midfielder initially impressed, especially during the latter half of the 2021-2022 season. However, his recent performances have left supporters frustrated, with many questioning his consistency and impact on the pitch.

De Paul's quality is undeniable; few in Atletico's squad match his technical skill. Yet, his attitude has been called into question this season.

A rough start on 19 August saw him apologise for a poor showing against Villarreal. Things didn't improve when he was substituted at half-time in Lisbon and later lost a crucial ball against Real Sociedad, on 2 October, allowing them to equalise.

These missteps cost him his starting spot against Leganes, and his subsequent performance against Real Betis at the Benito Villamarin did little to restore faith.

In Sunday's Betis clash, De Paul struggled significantly. He lost possession 14 times, failed to win a single direct duel, and couldn't connect with a decisive pass or attempt a shot on goal. For a player known for his vision and powerful long-range strikes, these numbers are concerning.

After three seasons, De Paul has yet to solidify his place in the Atletico line-up or win over the fans. With his contract running until 2026, this season could be crucial.

If he cannot regain form and prove his worth, a potential transfer may be on the horizon.
