Ronwen Williams picks up triple nomination in CAF Awards

Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has continued his rapid rise after picking three nominations at the upcoming CAF Awards.

Williams is among the shortlists for the CAF Men's Player of the Year, Goalkeeper of the Year, as well as Inter-club Player of the Year for his exploits at international and club level.

This comes on the back of global recognition, having been nominated in the Ballon d'Or Awards, vying for the Yachine Trophy – which honours the best goalkeeper in the world – alongside the likes of Argentina's World Cup-winner Emiliano Martinez.

The 32-year-old is the only South African named among the individual honours at the CAF Awards, while Bafana and coach Hugo Broos have earned nominations for National Team of the Year and Coach of the Year respectively.

Sundowns have also been named on the shortlist for Men's Club of the Year, after winning the inaugural African Football League, reaching the CAF Champions League semi-finals, and qualifying for next year's expanded FIFA Club World Cup.

Broos, having led Bafana to their first semi-final and earning a second bronze medal in 24 years, is nominated alongside AFCON-winning Ivory Coast coach Emerse Fae, Al Ahly's Marcell Kohler and Al Hilal's Florent Ibenge, among others.

Bafana are competing against Nigeria, Mozambique, Angola, Ivory Coast, DR Congo, Morocco, Burkina Faso, Uganda, and Sudan for the best national team award.

The awards evening is scheduled for 16 December 2024 in Marrakech, Morocco.
