Argentinian media reported two weeks ago that Esquivel, 24, had agreed personal terms with Downs on a four-year deal that would see him move to South Africa from Club Atletico Lanus in Buenos Aires.
However, Mokwena refused to give much away.
"Argentinian? Oh, you seem to know more than me," responded the coach when quizzed over the reports that have sent social media into a mini-frenzy in recent days.
"I know absolutely nothing as I sit here."
Meanwhile, Mokwena also issued a reminder that they remain the undisputed kings of the domestic game, after Sundowns were held to a goalless draw by Cape Town City on Sunday – a result that ended their 11 league game winning streak.
"[In] all the games of football, the result belongs to anybody, not just these [league] games, and I'm not worried," he added.
"We are number one in the Champions League group, and everyone's talking and making hoo-ha, but we're number one in the [DStv Premiership], even with the difficult schedule that we have.
"We were in the MTN8 final, we won the AFL [African Football League], so really, when I look at what we've done for the first round of this season, I mean you've got to appreciate what this group of players have done.
"[They put in] incredible effort in every single match, they give the best that they can, and as I said to you, we are not entitled to win."
