Rulani Mokwena: Do we have VAR in South Africa?

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena has questioned referee Jelly Chavani’s officiating in their 2-2 draw against Moroka Swallows in the DStv Premiership on Monday night at the Dobsonville Stadium.

Mokwena argues both goals from The Dube Birds, scored by attackers Augustine Mahlonoko and Gabadinho Mhango were “offside”.

Speaking after the game, the Downs mentor questioned whether Chavani consulted with a secret VAR at the venue.

''I don't need an explanation because guys - it is the third time Sundowns has VAR and you are not writing about it, both goals are offside,'' said Mokwena.

Mokwena added that he was not confused by the laws of the game hence he can make a strong case why the equalisers, after midfielders Teboho Mokoena and Marcelo Allende had given Sundowns the lead, shouldn’t have stood.

''The first goal is an offside and the second goal is also offside, I don't need to be explained to, I studied the laws of the game very well,'' added Mokwena.

Mokwena joins a long list of his counterparts who’ve been raising concerns about the standard of refereeing in the PSL.

He says the latest incidents paints a poor picture to the rest of the world.

''It's two things for me, South African football, what does it do? Okay now, everybody watches this game - from world wide, I have people in Europe who watch every single Sundowns game, what do you think is their perception of South African football?,'' he concluded.

Mokwena insisted that he’d been silent on the level of officiating this season, but he could no longer hold back.
