Amid Banyana's protest over 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup contractual demands last Sunday, SAFA hastily pulled together a group of 14 players – some as young as 16 years old, to represent the senior women's national team in a friendly match at Tsakane Stadium.
While all the focus was on coach Desiree Ellis' original 23-women World Cup squad and their impasse with the association over financial incentives, little was noted over the compensation for the players who actually played against The Mares.
"What we were going to do was to give them a win or draw bonus that had always been budgeted for [for the game] against Botswana," explained Monyepao when asked by SABC Sport of the payment plan.
"Unfortunately, the results didn't go their way. However, we will be giving them some money as a stipend, which we would have given to the normal players."
Pressed on whether the payment would equate to the exact amounts the 'original' Banyana players would have received, Monyepao elaborated: "Ja, they will get a daily allowance. Unfortunately, because they didn't win or draw the game, they can't get a bonus."
