The fixture, originally scheduled for 28 December, has been relocated due to significant damage to the stadium's pitch caused by a recent concert.
Thipa Selala, a representative of the Polokwane municipality, revealed that the pitch was heavily impacted during Makhadzi's One Woman Show concert over the weekend. Known for its pristine playing surface, the stadium now requires extensive repairs.
"No, the pitch at the new Peter Mokaba Stadium will not be able to accommodate the game on Saturday," Selala said as quoted by KickOff. "We have two stadiums in Polokwane, the old and the new Peter Mokaba Stadiums. We are currently in discussions with stakeholders about utilizing the old Peter Mokaba Stadium. We will communicate with the clubs and await their responses."
An assessment of the damage has determined that the pitch is unplayable for the weekend fixture and could remain out of use until January 2025. Plans to refurbish the field are already underway.
"To ensure the continuity of these fixtures, we have initiated discussions with all relevant stakeholders to relocate the matches to the old Peter Mokaba Stadium," Selala added. "Meanwhile, efforts are being made to restore the damaged pitch to meet the required standards for future Betway Premiership matches."
The municipality assured fans and clubs that updates on the refurbishment process would be provided in due course. Selala emphasized their commitment to maintaining top-quality facilities and minimizing disruption to the league schedule.
This unforeseen change highlights the challenges of balancing large-scale events with the demands of professional football. Both clubs are expected to adapt quickly as they prepare for the crucial fixture in an alternative venue.
