Sipho Chaine: Orlando Pirates need to restore Champions League pride

As Orlando Pirates begin their CAF Champions League campaign this weekend, goalkeeper Sipho Chaine has stressed the need to once again become regular features among the continent’s best.

Pirates face Madagascan champions Disciples in Mauritius in the first leg of the preliminary stage on Sunday.

After failing to make the group stages last season, Chaine says it’s about time The Buccaneers make their mark in the competition.

"Definitely, I think as a club like Orlando Pirates, to represent a big brand like this on the African continent – where we play among the best on the continent, it should be a norm and something we always strive to do every season," said Chaine.

The last time Pirates reached the group stage was in 2019 under coach Milutin “Micho” Sredojevic, when they bowed out in the quarterfinals.

Chaine is banking on picking up from where they left off at the end of last season, when they beat Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup final.

"I think every season we set out to reach our highest potential, and whether we reach them or not, the most important thing is to put high targets for yourself to compete on all fronts," he added.

"Whether you're playing in the Champions League, [domestic] league, cup competitions, ours is to work as hard as possible to reach our full potential as Orlando Pirates and, and strive on all fronts, in every competition that we compete in."
