One of the biggest matches on the African continent is set take place this weekend when Orlando Pirates take on Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby at the FNB Stadium on Saturday with kick off scheduled for 15:30.

The teams are the biggest in South Africa and attract legions of fans all around the country with tickets already sold out a month in advance for the encounter at the 100 000 capacity stadium.

The public will be able to view the titanic contest on SABC 1, which includes a live build-up from 2pm, while the national broadcaster will also be offering the game on their streaming platform, sabc-plus.com.

Though it is a designated home match for Pirates, the Buccaneers will not be playing at their usual venue, the Orlando Stadium, which can only hold close to 40 000 spectators.

The iconic FNB Stadium played host to the FIFA World Cup final in 2010 and is unique in that it is the only stadium in South Africa that can host the clash between the Soweto giants.

The history of the fixture goes back to 1970, when Kaizer Motaung, a former Pirates player, formed his own team on his return from playing in the United States.

Over more than five decades, both clubs have grown into powerful brands, achieving success on the field while also dominating commercially.
