According to information gathered by SABC Sport, the former Moroka Swallows defender has attracted the attention of Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs, although the big guns have not initiated any formal bids just yet.
The 27-year-old has been one of the stand-out players for Stellenbosch this season, helping them win the Carling Knockout cup – a historic first-ever topflight trophy for the side from the Winelands – early last month.
Basadien, who joined from The Dube Birds in July 2022, was also named by Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos in the 50-man preliminary squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, but missed out on the final 23.
It is understood the player entered the last year of his initial deal, but indications are that Stellies have triggered the option to hold on to him longer.
“We're in positive discussions with him to renew on a longer-term, but we do have him secured for another 18 months at this stage,” said club CEO Rob Benadie when approached by the public broadcaster for an update.
The club have become known as a selling team of late, with high-profile players such as defender Olwethu Makhanya (USA), midfielders Junior Mendieta (Sundowns), Ibraheem Jabaar (Israel), and Sibongiseni Mthethwa (Chiefs) having moved on at the start of the current season.
But coach Steve Barker has publicly stated that the intention is now to retain the current group that he led to the club’s recent milestone.
As things stand, Basadien is now tied to Stellies until at least June 2025, with the hope he agrees to a new and improved deal that will continue beyond that.
