Steve Barker identifies two important players for Stellies run-in

Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker expects attackers Ashely Cupido and Langelihle Phili to have a big impact in the club’s remaining fixtures in all competitions this season.

Cupido scored the winning goal in their 2-1 Betway Premiership victory over Magesi at the Danie Craven Stadium on Tuesday night.

Phili had a hand in setting up his teammate as both players appear to have found their feet since joining from Cape Town Spurs and AmaZulu respectively.

Barker first touched on Cupido’s contribution.

"Nice for Ashley to get on a score sheet again, I thought he had the two but it seems like one was an own goal but still his presence forced the error. Nice for him to be getting on a score sheet considering Bradley [Mojela] is out for the season and Ashley is in the beginning but he's a goal scorer and it was just a matter of time and just continue just believing and giving him the confidence,” Barker said.

“So, hopefully with this sort of run that he's having if he can maintain that for us until the end of the season, it will be really good."

The coach added that the 20-year-old Phili is fast learning to play to his strengths.

"Yes, I think so, again, young player, experience has taught me that it's never just the upward curve, you sort of come and you realise the level is [high], there are certain things that you need to change,” he added.

“So, I think when he started, he was running into trouble and now he's learning to sort of pass and move and create more space for him. He was a bit unlucky not to get on the scoresheet the other evening with the big save but he's difficult to play with.

“He's quick on his feet, he's quite strong to get off the ball so if he can just keep improving his decision-making once he is then behind then I do believe he can be a big opener."
