Steve Komphela rejoins Mamelodi Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed the return of senior coach Steve Komphela in the wake of coach Rulani Mokwena's surprise departure.

Just days after Sundowns announced that they have amicably parted ways with Mokwena, who was under contract until June 2027, the club have now roped Komphela back into the technical team.

SABC Sport has been led to believe Mokwena's departure – despite winning the African Football League and DStv Premiership in record fashion, as well as reaching the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup finals in the past season – was down to a fallout with club sporting director Flemming Berg.

The former Kaizer Chiefs and Moroka Swallows mentor, who joined Golden Arrows as head coach as recently as March after parting ways with the Dube Birds in February, will return in the same capacity at Chloorkop.

"Mamelodi Sundowns today welcomed Steve Komphela who will serve as Senior Coach and will assist Manqoba Mngqithi and the Technical Team," read a statement from The Brazilians on Saturday morning.

Mngqithi's exact role remains uncertain, having previously been demoted from co-coach to senior coach, while Komphela was renamed first team coach, when Mokwena was made sole head coach in October 2022.

The reschuffling of the technical team at Sundowns has left many wondering about the dealings within the club's management, who also came under scrutiny when coach Pitso Mosimane left for Al Ahly just months after signing a new contract in 2020.
