Sundowns win over Royal AM a little untidy - Manqoba Mngqithi

Mamelodi Sundowns continued their perfect start to the Betway Premiership, with a 2-1 win over Royal AM last night, but coach Manqoba Mngqithi felt the performance was far from polished.

The Brazilians took the lead early in the first half when midfielder Sphelele Mkhulise scored in the sixth minute, while defender Khuliso Mudau added a second in the dying minutes of the match.

The visitors pulled one back in stoppage time via Sbangani Zulu to make it a nervy finish, which Mngqithi was not pleased with.

"I think we started the match quite well, from the very first minute I think we created a chance, and we scored a goal from a press that we worked on," said Mngqithi.

"It was very good to see Mkhulise scoring in that situation because I think it was exactly what we anticipated, but after scoring that goal I think we became a little bit casual.

"We were not neat, our game was very untidy, especially in the final third – I think we could have finished the game in the first half, had we just maybe stuck to the basics.

"There were many instances where that final pass from Peter [Shalulile], [Thembinkosi] Lorch, Lucas [Ribeiro], from almost all the offensive players we made some wrong decisions and poor technique sometimes.

"That kept the game alive, until a point we felt maybe it's important to change a little bit in the second half, and we brought in Neo [Maema] and [Siyabonga] Mabena, and I think that brought a bit of life into the game.

"Fortunately, with a very good pass that Neo played for Lucas, and Lucas to [Khuliso] Mudau, we managed to seal the game that really looked like it was going to be complicated in the latter stages because we were playing against a very good team."
