Ahead of the Soweto Derby clash this weekend, we take a look at ten must-know records from the rivalry's history.
Top goalscorers
The player to have scored the most goals in derby history is Pule 'Ace' Ntsoelengoe, who scored 19 goals. Teenage Dladla, Abednigo Ngcobo and Marks Maponyane have netted 11 times with Maponyane only one of six players to have scored in both colours.
Jomo Sono has netted the most goals for Pirates in Soweto Derbies with nine strikes.
Hat-tricks
Remarkably, there have only been three hat-tricks in the derby's history.
Ebison Mugoyo got the first in a 5-1 win for Chiefs, while Henry Khumalo managed the second as Pirates claimed a 3-1 success. Jerry Skosana notched the last hat-trick for Pirates - all the way back in 1996.
Most meetings in a single season
The record for the most number of Soweto Derby matches in a single season was set in 1975, when the sides met eight times in various competitions. That season the two sides met eight times inside 12 months twice in the league; in the two legs of the Champions of Champions final; the semifinal of the first-ever mixed tournament which was also called the Champion of Champions; the Life Challenge final and the BP Top 16 semifinal which also necessitated a replay.
Most goals in a single match
The most goals scored in a Soweto derby game is 10, which has occurred twice, including in the very first meeting. Pirates claimed a 6-4 victory in January 1970, while Chiefs won 7-3 in February 1972.
Scorers for both sides
The players to have scored for both sides in a Soweto Derby are Gabriel Khoza, Blessing Mgidi, Jerry Sadike, Ace Khuse, Mark Maponyane and Marc Bachelor.
Most player appearances in PSL era
There are five players to have played in the most Soweto derbies - Happy Jele, Simphiwe Tshabalala, Bernard Parker, Willard Katsande and Itumeleng Khune. Happy Jele is the most-capped with 33 and Tshabalala is in second with 31.
Longest unbeaten run
An 11-match unbeaten run Chiefs had against Pirates between May 1985 and November 1988.
Fastest goal
The fastest goal in the history of the derby match came after just 19 seconds from Mabhudi Khenyeza for Chiefs in Durban in November 2007.
Coaches of both sides
Kosta Papic Walter da Silva Ted Dumitru Augusto Palacios, Joe Frickleton and Vladimir Vermezovic are amog those to have coached both sides.
First foreign goalscorer
Herman Blaschke the Namibian-born was the first foreigner to score in the derby between Chiefs and Pirates in 1975. Later the same year Zimbabwean Ebison Mugoyo also got a goal for the AmaKhosi.
