Three points for Cape Town City all that mattered for Eric Tinkler

Three points for Cape Town City all that mattered for Eric Tinkler

Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler says prioritising three points over performance was the main priority yesterday as he thanked the players’ character for carrying them through.

City registered a 1-0 Betway Premiership win away to Chippa United at Buffalo City Stadium in East London, with Kayden Francis, who was signed from Chippa a few months back, scoring the decisive goal.

Tinkler says the primary objective was the result.

"I don't want to talk about the performance, I want to talk about the result because that was the prime objective here today – to get a result because of our league position," said Tinkler.

"So I don't really want to focus too much on our performance, I want to focus on the character the players today showed, they needed to fight from the first minute to the 95th minute, and that was the importance of the result today.

"They didn't give up, they kept going and kept fighting, and they got rewarded for that effort, so I think that was what was important today, to make sure we collect maximum points so we can move on."

This was only The Citizens’ second win in the last seven matches in all competitions, and at some stage it seemed Tinkler’s job was on the line.

But the former Bafana Bafana midfielder now believes they can build from this.

"Ja, obviously, we've had a tough run, to be brutally honest, because all these games have been away, and we finish off the year right at the end – on the 29th against AmaZulu, and that will be our first home game in over a month," he added.

"So we want to make sure that obviously we get a positive result at home, and two wins in this league then you find yourself in a very different predicament, so that's the importance."
