Upington City secure Orlando Pirates duo on loan

Motsepe Foundation Championship side Upington City have agreed a deal with Orlando Pirates for defender Jabu Mokone and winger Seth Green.

SABC Sport has been informed the duo will this month join the lower division outfit on loan until the end of the 2024/25 season.

Both Mokone and Green were recently selected by fans to be part of the Carling All-Star team coached by Jose Riveiro, which went on to beat Magesi FC 3-0 in the Carling Black Label Cup last month.

It was the second season running that Mokone, the 21-year-old who can feature at both right-back and as an attacker, was picked by the supporters.

Pirates have so far kept the pair as part of their DStv Diski Challenge team, despite growing calls for them to be promoted to the first team.

However, although Mokone has been invited to train with the senior team before, Riveiro has been adamant there’s no need to rush the youngsters at this stage.

The public broadcaster can now confirm that both players are headed over to work with coach Brandon Truter in the second tier and  help Upington in their bid for promotion.

Truter returned to the Northern Cape based outfit following his exit from Richards Bay and faces an uphill battle in guiding them away from the lower half of the table and into – at least – a promotion play-off spot.

Mokone and Green, who also turns 21 later this year, are expected to beef up the squad and give them depth in the second half of the campaign.
