UWC up in arms with kit distributor after non delivery the whole season

The University of the Western Cape (UWC) is in a race against time to have a new kit for the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League, which is expected to be played later this year.

Despite paying the full amount for the purchase long before the start of the current Hollywoodbets Super League season, the Capetonians are yet to receive their shipment.

The public broadcaster understands that due to the non-delivery, UWC has had to use last year’s kit for their assignments this season across all their teams, but it appears they have now had enough and want nothing more to do with the Macron kit distributor in South Africa, Dennis Tshabalala.

A UWC insider told SABC Sport that the delay has also affected the other two women’s teams playing in the Sasol League and in the Regional League.

“Dennis has been making empty promises from way back since pre-season, and now we are only a few matches away from the end of the current campaign, he is still singing the same song. We had hoped to have the merchandise - which includes the playing kit and tracksuits – at the recent CAF Women’s Champions League COSAFA qualifier in Malawi, but nothing came through,” said the insider.

“We started with Macron back in 2021 and while we had our challenges, it was not this serious – we should have seen the signs. The challenge we are facing also involves our two other women’s teams, and for this year, we have had to improvise. We have done everything we could but to no avail.”

When SABC Sport contacted Tshabalala earlier this week, he had this to say:

“Things happened that should not have happened, but I promised them that they will get their merchandise before the end of the week. I can’t say much now except I will make good on my promise, and I don’t want to talk about the past.”

But at the time of going to publishing this story, UWC had not yet received their merchandise.

The Capetonians are heading to their inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League later this year after winning the title in Malawi last month.

Now all hope of sporting a new kit at the tournament is slowly evaporating.

“Look, if we have waited the whole season, why would we be hopeful to receive the kit anytime soon. All we are saying is that he should bring back the payment and we will look elsewhere - perhaps that is the reason why all the other teams that used to wear Macron no longer do. We are really disappointed in him and want this to come to an end with either our funds back or the kit delivered,” added the UWC insider.

The Capetonians will be in action this afternoon, Sunday, 15 September 2024, where they face the University of Pretoria in a Varsity Derby. The clash takes place at the UJ Soccer Stadium in Soweto.

UWC are second on the table of the Hollywoodbets Super League on 50 points – 15 behind log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies, but the students have four games in hand.
