End of the road for UWC in the CAF Women’s Champions League

The University of the Western Cape were eliminated in the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League following a 2-0 loss to hosts AS FAR in Morocco on Friday evening.

This was their final group stage fixture, and the South Africans have now suffered two defeats in the competition, finishing third on the table in Group A with three points, behind leaders AS FAR on nine while second placed TP Mazembe of DR Congo is on six. Senegal’s Aigles de la Medina, who were knocked out alongside UWC, return home without any points.

Though our CAF Women’s Champions League 20234 journey ends early, our hearts fill with pride. Every match was a testament to our resilience and passion. This isn’t the end; it’s just the beginning. Thank you Blue family for your incredible support— we’ll come back stronger,” said UWC on X.

It was always going to be difficult for the Capetonians after losing their opening match 2-0 to TP Mazembe, with the hosts lying in wait in the final group stage match.

UWC coach Thinasonke Mbuli called it “their final before the final” and it was exactly that.

The South Africans had chances to take the lead as they got out of the blocks first, but the Moroccans were resolute in defence.

Ten minutes before the break Mbuli’s side was bridged from the penalty spot after Simnikiwe Mhlakazi brought down Sanaa Mssoudy, and Doha El Madani gave the North African’s the lead.

UWC fought back after the recess with Tiffany Kortjie almost benefitting from a defensive error, but Khadija Er-Rmichi pulled off a brilliant save.

El Madani completed her brace in the 62nd minute, giving the 2022 champions a 2-0 win but also confirming the end of the journey for The Blues.

They will go down in history for being the first university side to qualify for the tournament, and for grabbing a win in their debut appearance.

In the other Group A match, TP Mazembe cruised to the semi-finals with an impressive 4-0 victory over the winless Aigles de la Medina.

By virtue of finishing top of Group A, AS FAR now waits for the runner up in Group B, while TP Mazembe has a date with the group B leaders.

In Group A, Edo Queens of Nigeria are on four points, level with FC Masar, followed by Sundowns Ladies on three points while CBE have no points on the table.

Group B concludes their business this evening (Saturday) when defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies attempt to gain a spot in the last four. They face a stubborn Edo Queens who need only a draw to progress. FC Masar takes on Central Bank of Ethiopia.

Both matches kick off at 7pm South African time
