Victor Boniface blow for Leverkusen amid Florian Wirtz departure talks

Bayer Leverkusen forward Victor Boniface missed training on Thursday, raising concerns after reports suggested he suffered a thigh injury during the international break.

Nigerian outlets have claimed the 23-year-old could face several weeks on the sidelines, though Leverkusen have not confirmed the severity of the issue.

This setback marks Boniface's second injury while on international duty this year.

In January, the Nigerian international underwent adductor surgery that kept him out until April. If he is unavailable for Saturday's Bundesliga clash against Heidenheim, Patrik Schick is expected to lead the line for Die Werkself.

Meanwhile, Leverkusen are planning for the future as speculation continues over Florian Wirtz's potential departure.

The 21-year-old star, regarded as one of Europe's most promising attacking midfielders, is widely expected to leave the club in the coming years.

Stuttgart's Enzo Millot has emerged as a strong candidate to succeed Wirtz. The 22-year-old, who excels in a similar central attacking role, is reportedly available for 20 million euros due to a release clause.

Leverkusen are reportedly considering bringing Millot in as early as this summer, allowing him time to adapt to the club before taking on greater responsibilities.

While some reports suggest Wirtz could depart at the end of this season, Kicker reported that Leverkusen remain hopeful of retaining him for at least another year.

Talks to extend his contract beyond 2027 are said to be progressing positively, keeping alive the possibility of Wirtz staying through 2026.

Leverkusen's immediate focus, however, will be on overcoming Boniface's absence as they look to maintain momentum in the Bundesliga.
