This was one of Bay’s most important wins this season in the DStv Premiership as it ensures that Cape Town Spurs are officially relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
Sanele Barns scored the only goal in this game, against the run of play in the first half. Vilakazi has more on how they achieved this result.
"Very difficult game I must be honest but I think I did mention even before the game that a proper planning will do for us as a team. Facing Orlando Pirates lately is not child's play,” Vilakazi said.
“We were facing a team that is flying high but because we stuck to the plan and tried to frustrate them to be strong defensively and try to frustrate them for a longer period and then we might get attacks or counterattacks in order for us to score a goal and I think the boys stuck to the plan. They've worked according to what we planned and we are happy. We needed these three points even more than Orlando Pirates, we are fighting for our lives."
This was Bay’s first win against Pirates in the league after four matches.
With 27 points and two games to go, they still have a chance of avoiding going to the play-offs, but they will need Royal AM, who are on 29 points with three matches to play, to continue dropping results.
Vilakazi says they were clear on their approach for this.
"No. no, I'm not too sure about that. We were only focusing on what we needed to do as a team, as Richards Bay, other results we were not focusing on. I think only one result which were the Swallows game so we were hoping because obviously if we win here, we have to chase someone but we still have a chance because we're chasing Royal AM now since Swallows won. But I didn't see or check how Pirates needs to play or win the game and the impact in that, I didn't check that," the coach explained.
