Johnson was speaking during the post-match press conference at FNB Stadium last night after beating Cape Town Spurs 3-2 in a DStv Premiership match.
The former Platinum Stars and SuperSport United mentor, who was recently appointed as Head of Youth Development, sees a bigger role in building the strictures of this club through his original position.
"It's something that appeals to me, but there's something bigger that appeals to me at Kaizer Chiefs," said Johnson when asked about his ambitions of bagging the permanent head coach position.
"I've been to some of the biggest teams in the world, and I've worked with one of the biggest teams in the world – when I say this team has that potential, I think you need to bring from a bigger team and put it in this team, but not as a head coach.
"A head coach will always be changed in any club, but I feel this team is not where it's supposed to be and, maybe with my little knowledge that I have [in development], I think this team can be as big as it should be."
Johnson is no stranger to big football projects in the country, having started the Ajax Cape Town development programme in the early 2000s, when he roped in the likes of Steven Pienaar and Dillon Sheppard from the School of Excellence.
He also started similar projects at Mamelodi Sundowns and Platinum Stars before taking on senior coaching roles, but the former Al Ahly assistant coach maintains that a successful Chiefs is incomparable to any team locally.
"There's a cloth that, for me, needs to be shown to the rest of the world, and I think this team has it. So, whether I'm the head coach or the interim coach, I've come to this team because there's something that nobody else has, and I say it with all respect to other clubs in the PSL."
