The former midfield maestro, turned Bayer Leverkusen coach, has orchestrated a remarkable turnaround for Die Schwarzroten, propelling them to the summit of the Bundesliga.
Taking the reins in October 2022, Alonso inherited a team languishing near the bottom of the Bundesliga. Swiftly and decisively, the Spanish tactician transformed the club's fortunes, steering them to a commendable sixth-place finish and a gripping run to the Europa League semi-finals. His strategic emphasis on defensive solidity and a dynamic counter-attacking style laid the foundation for this resurgence.
The current season sees Leverkusen in peak form, dominating matches and showcasing some of the Bundesliga's most captivating football. Unbeaten in ten games with an impressive 28 points, they trail only the legendary Bayern Munich of the 2015-16 season. Alonso's 3-4-3 formation has been a revelation, guiding Leverkusen to a record-breaking goal tally at this stage.
Summer acquisitions, including Granit Xhaka, Alex Grimaldo, Jonas Hofmann and the prolific Victor Bonfiace, have seamlessly integrated into Alonso's vision. The departure of Moussa Diaby to Aston Villa paved the way for these impactful signings, with Bonfiace netting seven times and providing five assists, while Grimaldo boasts eight goal contributions from his left wing-back position.
Sporting director Simon Rolfes lauds Alonso for instilling a sense of seriousness and maturity in Leverkusen's football. Rolfes notes Alonso's adaptable approach, emphasizing a pragmatic style when needed, a departure from a rigid philosophy. The essence of winning, according to Rolfes, matters more to Alonso than a stylistic dogma.
Alonso's managerial success echoes his illustrious playing career, adorned with silverware such as the 2010 World Cup and consecutive European Championships with Spain. Champions League triumphs with Liverpool and Real Madrid, coupled with three Bundesliga titles at Bayern, underscore his pedigree.
Speculation about Alonso's future swirls, linking him with potential returns to Liverpool and Real Madrid, while Bayern remain an interested party. The prospect of a managerial vacancy at the Bernabeu doesn't faze Rolfes, who remains unperturbed by the rumours, asserting that success attracts attention.
While losing Alonso would undoubtedly be a setback for Leverkusen, the blow could be softened if he achieves the elusive Bundesliga title.
The question lingers: Can Xabi Alonso lead Bayer Leverkusen to their first-ever Bundesliga crown?
