Zsolt Low takes charge of RB Leipzig in bold move to salvage season

RB Leipzig have appointed Zsolt Low as their new head coach until the end of the season, replacing the recently sacked Marco Rose, the Bundesliga club confirmed.

The decision comes after Leipzig slipped to sixth place following a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Borussia Monchengladbach, piling pressure on the former boss.

Low, 45, steps up from his role as Head of Football Development at Red Bull, signing a deal that runs until the end of the 2024-25 campaign. The club announced he will take charge of his first training session on Monday. Assisting him will be Peter Krawietz, 53, who joins as co-trainer to bolster the dugout.

"Zsolt Low brings everything needed to turn things around quickly and spark a real upturn in performance," said Leipzig's sporting director Marcel Schafer.

"He's got bags of experience, a proven track record at Europe's top clubs, and the right approach to get us back on track."

Schäfer added that the players now have a big role to play in reversing their fortunes alongside Low, while the club are already planning for next season's managerial appointment.

Low, speaking about his new role, said: "All our focus is on the nine games left this season. We've still got a shot at hitting our targets in two competitions. We'll throw everything at reaching the Cup final in Berlin and making the most of what's left in the Bundesliga."

No stranger to Leipzig, Low previously served as an assistant coach between 2015 and 2018 under Ralph Hasenhuttl and Ralf Rangnick. His CV boasts stints as assistant to Thomas Tuchel at Bayern Munich (2023-24), Chelsea (2021-22), and Paris Saint-Germain (2018-20), as well as spells at Red Bull Salzburg (2014-15) and FC Liefering (2012-14).

His trophy cabinet includes the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021, plus league titles in Germany (2023), France (2019 and 2020), and Austria (2015).

As a player, Low featured as a defender in the Bundesliga for Energie Cottbus, TSG Hoffenheim, and FSV Mainz 05, bringing a wealth of footballing know-how to the touchline.

With the season hanging in the balance, all eyes are on Low to deliver.
