Following his surprise exit from Stellenbosch FC early last month, for what the club labelled misconduct, the former junior international recently resurfaced at The Dube Birds as he looks to resurrect his career.

But it has emerged that the 26-year-old only received his clearance and confirmation of the terminated contract from Stellies long after the January transfer window had closed.

Transfer regulations state free agents are permitted to join any club of their choice, provided their exit from their previous employer took place within the registration period.

The public broadcaster has checked and verified that this is not the case with Sekgota, who would now have to appeal to the Premier Soccer League’s Dispute Resolution Chamber [DRC] for special consideration.

With Swallows having cleared house at the start of the year on the back of the mass exodus of players like defender Keegan Allan, midfielder Andile Jali, strikers Kagiso Malinga and Tshegofatso Mabasa, who cut his loan spell short and went back to Orlando Pirates, there was room for fresh faces.

It’s believed the Swallows hierarchy have given Sekgota permission to continue training with the team under the watchful eye of coach Musa Nyatama, having taken over from Steve Komphela recently, but with the knowledge that he is not being signed – unless his status is reversed in a highly unlikely scenario.

Sekgota played for Swallows during the 2020/21 season before moving to Kaizer Chiefs, where he spent two seasons before being offloaded and signed by Stellies on a free transfer around August last year.

The speedy winger has also enjoyed spells in Lithuania and Portugal prior to returning home to join the now defunct Bidvest Wits.

He now has to wait until July 1 when the window re-opens to get his fresh start if he wishes to remain in the DStv Premiership.
