Kagiso Rabada: There needs to be a balance between bat and ball

Kagiso Rabada has called for pitches in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) to be better balanced between bat and ball following a high-scoring start to the T20 tournament.

There have been six totals above the 200-run mark in just five matches with bowlers struggling to contain big-hitters and defending short boundaries.

Sunrisers Hyderabad amassed 286-6 before the Rajasthan Royals replied with 242-6 while Delhi Capitals chased down a target a 210 against Lucknow Super Giants.

Rabada was involved in another high-scoring affair on Tuesday, when his team, Gujarat Titans, failed to chase down a mammoth total of 244 against the Punjab Kings, losing by just 11 runs.

In quotes published in the Indian Express, the Proteas fast bowler said: "The game has to progress somehow, but I don't think it can just get too flat, like every single game. It would take the fun out of it.

"You know, then you might as well call our sport batting, and not cricket. I have no issues with a few records being broken; thatâ™s fine.

"High-scoring games are good, but so are low-scoring games. But you can't have it tilting either side too dramatically, there needs to be a balance that is maintained between bat and ball."

Rabada further stated that the game would become boring if it was just a one-sided encounter, whether that favours bat or ball.

He added: "You can't sit back and complain about the conditions. You must do something about it as a bowler. However, the game of cricket as a whole would just be boring if you just saw high scores or low scores all the time.

"The most exciting games are the ones which hang in the balance, requiring batters to apply themselves when wickets fall and play really well to win matches for their teams, or bowlers to step up in the same manner. It shouldn't be about just survival for either."
