Rising swimmer Pieter Coetze eyes a podium place finish at the upcoming Olympics

The teenage swimming sensation Pieter Coetze believes his recent bronze medal win at the World Aquatics Championships in Doha, is a significant boost towards securing a medal at the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics.

The 19-year old Coetze emerged as South Africa’s lone medallist at the championships, following his third finish in the men’s 200m backstroke event.

His remarkable contribution to Team SA’s 25th-place finish overall in the medal standings, solidified his reputation as one of the standout athletes of the championship.

''I'm very grateful to be able to win a medal, it has always been a goal of mine. I'm also very proud of the team, I really enjoyed the energy within the team, we have a good influence on each other and we motivate each other. To get a medal has motivated me for the rest of the year,'' said Coetze.

Coetze attributed his prized medal to his coach, Rocco Meiring, who not only guides him in his swimming journey but also holds the position of SA swimming head coach, and to his supportive parents.

''I can dedicate it to so many people, my parents - they have been there from the very beginning, they fly all over the world to watch me.’’

“Also to my coach, he has been with me every step of the way, when I'm disappointed he always knows what to say - giving me the reality check, so yeah - those are the main people,'' added Coetze.

Building upon their achievement in Doha, Coetze and his coach are determined to use this momentum to strive for Olympic glory in Paris later this year.

''Preparation wise, I don't think it will affect much. I'm trusting the process and believing that I can get on the podium. But I have learned lessons along the way, I think I learn much more when I lose than when I get on the podium,'' he concluded.
