The accolade is in honour of a para-athletics legend and four-time paralympic medallist who passed away in November 2023.
Speaking to SABC Sport, Kruger says she is inspired to follow in the late Situ’s footsteps.
“The Zanele Situ trophy means a lot to me because Zanele was such a legend in the sport and getting the trophy in her name is such an honour. I really want to follow in her footsteps and even achieve greater things,’’ said Kruger.
Kruger unpacks what her relationship with the para legend was like and what it meant to her.
“ She was always so humble and easy to talk to. As youngsters we were very much inspired by her journey and that is the reason why we do what we do. She led with so much grace and taught us a lot about excellence,’’ added Kruger.
The 19-year-old has recently joined the University of Stellenbosch to study Biokinetics starting with BSC Sport Science. She tells us more on making Maties her first choice.
“ Stellenbosch university has always been a university that support me in my journey and that is why I chose them. I am enjoying every moment of my university days, but it’s so much harder than high school. I am getting used to the work,’’ she expressed.
Next big competition for Kruger will be the National Champions starting in Gqeberha on 28 March, followed by the World Championships in India from 26 September.
“My goal is to keep the good momentum and excel. I look forward to the two big championships this year and I really want to do well,’’ added Kruger.
