Sharks hungry to add Currie Cup to season's trophy haul

Sharks forwards coach Warren Whiteley says a win in the Currie Cup final against the Lions on Saturday will be a testament to the team’s determination to achieve more this season.

Coach John Plumtree’s side head to Ellis Park in hopes of clinching their second title this season, after becoming the first South African team to lift the EPCR Challenge Cup in May.

Whiteley believes they will continue from where they left off when they came out victorious in a dramatic semi-final encounter against the Bulls at Loftus last Saturday.

"It's such a huge opportunity, with the rich heritage and history that the Currie Cup has and it still holds a lot of that value, and some people might argue that," said Whiteley.

"But you don't have to look far, you can just look at last weekend's performance – that game was just incredible at Loftus, just to see both teams put it out there, was incredible to watch, so it means a lot to a lot of people.

"It will be fantastic for us, of course, [to win it], but we want to be better and we need to be better. There are some areas within that game that we're not satisfied with yet, and we want to keep improving – that's the ultimate goal for us as a team and organisation."

Despite the Lions coming into this clash as favourites, having ended at the summit of the log with 43 points, Sharks loose-forward James Venter said focusing on their team model will be crucial against the hosts.

"We've definitely got a dynamic, explosive loose trio as well, so I just know we're going to stick to what we do – we've got our Sharks model and what we've got to give the team this weekend, and that's what we're focussing on," add Venter.

"It's going to be a good battle, and we're looking forward to it."
