Springbok RG Snyman reflects on return and Leinster debut

Springbok lock RG Snyman was a happy man after making his debut for Irish giants Leinster in the United Rugby Championship on Saturday.

The double World Cup winner has had a torrid time with injuries in his career and 2024 has proved no different. Snyman had been sidelined with a foot injury since July, missing the Boks' entire Rugby Championship campaign.

But on Saturday, the Potchefstroom native returned to the field. Snyman ran out in the blue of Leinster in Italy, where they romped to a 35-2 victory to keep their 2024 URC unbeaten streak alive.

In a pitchside interview published on Leinster's social media after the match, Snyman described his annoyance at another injury layoff.

"It was quite frustrating," said the 29-year-old.

"It gave me a chance to settle and get to know the [Leinster] boys. It was just great to be out there and making my debut in blue."

"The legs were ok. It is the lungs that need a bit of work. It is a work in progress."

Snyman added that there have been some adjustments since moving from Munster but his new club has welcomed him warmly.

"It was quite hectic, it's been quite busy," he added.

"But everyone has been very welcoming and it's nice to experience a club like Leinster."

The behemoth is now preparing for his biggest test at his new home as Leinster host perennial rivals Munster at Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Saturday. Nearly 70 000 tickets have been sold for the match.

"It's a special week, it's going to be a massive clash and I'm really looking forward to it," quipped the back-rower.
