The home side raced into a 17-0 lead in the opening 15 minutes after going over for three tries courtesy of Canan Moodie, Willie Le Roux and Sebastian de Klerk.
The Lions though fought back well and went over for two tries of their own through Henco van Wyk and hooker PJ Botha to make the score 17-14 at the halftime break.
The hosts however pulled away again after the interval with Moodie grabbing his brace and Marco van Staden joining him on the score sheet.
Winger Richard Kriel scored the Lions' third try with 15 minutes of the contest still remaining but it was too little to late to change the complexion of the game.
A full round of URC matches will be played next week, with the Bulls hosting the Stormers and the Lions up against the Sharks.
