Despite setbacks, Wandisile Simelane is still working towards his goal of wearing the green and gold Springbok jersey.
The Johannesburg native has already enjoyed success in the age-group levels, representing South Africa at the U18 and U20 levels, scoring nine tries in 15 appearances.
Since, Simelane has cut his teeth at the Lions franchise, predominantly at centre. However, rising star Henco van Wyk has been preferred in the outside centre jersey by the franchise this season. The explosive van Wyk cemented his position ahead of Simelane with a call-up to the SA A side in November.
Now, the Jeppe High School graduate is looking to turn over a new leaf under the instruction of the mercurial Jake White at the Bulls.
"My ambition will always be to become a Springbok," the 24-year-old told News24.
"It's every South African players dream to become a Springbok, so that's my number on goal. I've seen the move up to the Bulls as an opportunity to grow for me.
"Jake is a brilliant coach, there's brilliant players around me, so I've just seen positive only and I'm enjoying it so far. Day-by-day I'm growing as a player and I'm happy with where I'm at and I'm very excited about what the future holds."
Part of Simelane's growth as a player has been his deployment at fullback for the Bulls, who are spoiled for choice in the backline.
"While I enjoy playing fullback at the moment, my number one position is still outside centre," he added.
"As a 13 it helps me to understand the needs of the outside players when I run out at fullback or wing.
"Obviously I will always be available wherever the team needs me. I have played fullback at various levels but for the first time, the entire world can see me play fullback. The coach has a vision for me and we are constantly talking about it."
