The SuperSport United forward has signed a one-year contract with an option to extend, but the club hierarchy has already informed the veteran there’s room for him in the team set-up should he opt to hang up his boots.
Grobler, who has also confirmed a desire to coach, was the league’s top goal scorer with 16 goals two years ago having enjoyed an injury-free season.
When he is not battling niggles, the former Bafana Bafana international is usually rattling the net – and had it not been for those setbacks, Grobler would have joined the exclusive 100-goals club a lot sooner.
He officially became a centurion in January this year alongside great names like Daniel ‘Mambush’ Mudau and Siyabonga Nomvethe.
“If you asked me this question on day one of pre-season I would have said I am almost done,” said Grobler when SABC Sport probed whether he’d still be able to compete for the accolade ahead of their opener against Richards Bay on Saturday at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.
“But as preparation has gone on I feel good. I feel like I still got a lot to offer – we have youngsters on my tail now pushing me as well, which is good for the club to have and for a player like me.”
There’s no doubt that on his day Grobler is lethal, but SuperSport have added two deadly strikers to their squad with Etiosa Ighodaro arriving on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns, while Terrence Dzvukamanja has joined on a free transfer having finished strong at Orlando Pirates a few months ago.
“Obviously we have added some extra firepower upfront, which is good as well. But I feel great – touchwood, the last few seasons the injuries have kind of died off a bit and that’s a good thing for me,” explained Grobler.
“I’ve done well, I’ve scored a lot of goals. As the coach has said, at this age you take it one season at a time. So I feel quite excited about the new season.”
